Social Impact Project for Curriculum Developer for Equine Therapy Center

How This Works

In the MovingWorlds Institute Global Fellowship, you will learn how to advance your for-good career while getting hands on experience on projects like this one.

Project Description and Impact

We support a new and very innovative learning project with the Universidad Mayor de San Andrés, to provide therapy assisted by horses for children and young people with special needs, including physical and mental health disabilities and behavioral issues. We work alongside other Bolivian volunteers, students, and professionals to assist directly in the therapy sessions with the horses and by providing practical support in the maintenance of the centre and care of the horses.

In addition, we organise recreational, team building, and educational activities for the staff, students, and families around inclusion, environmental and social issues. This equine therapy centre is a magical place where the children and their families are welcomed with open arms and their differences are celebrated. We work alongside physical therapists and psychologists who provide physical and emotional therapy that complements the work done with the horses.

As this is a new project we are looking for volunteers with specific skills to strengthen to help us train up local staff, work in the therapy room (not necessarily directly with the horses), and help us give talks to families.

University students or professionals in the following fields would be warmly received and given the opportunity to share their skills and experience and help us learn and evaluate:

  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapist
  • Educational Psychologists
  • Psychologists
  • Special needs teachers

And of course, we actively seek out volunteers who have considerable experience with horses that can help us care for, exercise and train up the therapy horses.

Learning Opportunity

By participating in the MovingWorlds Institute, you will first learn social impact frameworks and human-centered design before putting your existing skills and new knowledge to action. In addition, this organization will expose you to new things, like:

You will learn about equine therapy and how this can be used to support children with special needs and their families.

You will work in a multidisciplinary team.

You will learn more about the socio-economic context of children with special needs in Bolivia and the political and social context of the country.

If you have particular expertise, we will ask you to share this expertise and experience through giving talks with university students, medical professional and perhaps the media in Bolivia.

We are based in the small village of Jupapina, which is approx 30-45 mins by bus from the city centre. It is a beautiful semi-rural village surrounded by mountains. There is a very strong sense of community - perhaps the most enriching aspect of our volunteers’ experience to date has been participating in this small community and getting a very real flavour of Aymara culture. As very few people speak English it is also the perfect place to learn / improve your Spanish.

Experteers live in shared volunteer accommodation in the grounds of our family home with some of the best view in La Paz over the mountains and down in the valley below. There are single and shared rooms – depending on availability. The houses are very comfortable and fully equipped, with kitchen, shared living areas, hammocks, Wi-Fi, cable TV and DVD machines and access to the family washing machine. For short term volunteers, groups or during busy periods, we may also offer you accommodation in our cabin or tipis.

Cost for accommodation is approximately 17 USD per day.

Additional Benefits

We can offer you a real flavour of Bolivia, living and working in a beautiful friendly village. You will understand indigenous Bolivian culture and be invited to participate in local fiestas and celebrations.

The accommodation is beautiful and a good place to relax when you are not working.

We will happily share with you tips and advice for local tourism too in Bolivia and help you set up Spanish classes too.

Before you arrive we will discuss your expectations and send you a provisional work plan and a pre arrival orientation pack.

Upon arrival, we will spend a full day giving your orientation, take you round the local shops, show you where to change money etc and show you how to use the local transport system.
