Project Description and Impact

After spending time in the rural areas, we noticed that there is a need for rural patients to access doctors and specialist care without travelling hundreds of kilometres. A rural district of 150 000 people is typically serviced by 2 doctors or less at one or two rural hospitals. There will be some 20+ or more statellite clinics scattered over 10 000 square kilometres. All clinics are manned by between 3 to 5 nurses. There was also need for social distancing and social isolation owing to covid 19.

As such, we figured out that if we can equip the nurses with Applications that can help them capture patient information and post it to a server for  a virtual doctor or specialist based anywhere in the country and beyond to review, then we would have brought healthcare right at the doorstep of our rural patients.

However, the virtual doctor will still need to write prescriptions and order services like laboratory tests and xrays. This is where Whatsapp App (chatbot) comes in. The doctor can generate a prescription and save it on our server, but many rural folk do not have smart phones, however most have access to a feature phone so our system will send the patient an SMS with their patient identifier and order number. Patient will take this SMS with them to a pharmacist of their choice where the pharmacist will use Whatsapp chatbot to retrieve the actual prescription from our server. The same goes for labs and other specialists. They can also load resultsto our server using the whatsapp chatbot.

We expect the impact to be huge as rural folks in Southern Africa access specialised healthcare easily.
