AgeWatch Africa Foundation

Organization Details
Founded in 2019, AgeWatch Africa Foundation (AgeWatch) serves livelihoods and long-term care needs of older persons (aged 60+) in rural Kenyan communities. AgeWatch focuses on improving their physical health and mental well-being by providing a continuum of services including home-based care, group daycare and rsidential (or institutional) care.
Impact Story
In Kenya, there are no formal structures to look after older people in their retirement. The retirees return to their rural homes away from urban centers and are left alone unattended as their younger family members move to urban centers for opportunities. No formal structures are in place to produce skilled caregivers to look after older persons. This leads to immense suffering and often to avoidable and pre-mature deaths. Since its inception, AgeWatch has continued to create needed awareness through community advocacy and by training locals into professional caregivers, ready to serve this vulnerable and underserved community. From an initial pilot in Kisumu West sub-county in 2019, AgeWatch already has footprints in six other neighbouring counties in Western Kenya and Nairobi City County. The result is graceful aging for the vulnerable older persons and a major relief to their families, most of whom work offsite, some in the diaspora, and endeavor to remit resources back home for the well-being of these older folks. Such sacrifices are yielding more meaningful and impactful results compared to before.
