Project Description and Impact

The Mbum ethnic group of the Donga Mantung Division in the Northwest region of Cameroon faces subjugation and dissolution on both the human and environmental fronts. The degradation of soil fertility has pushed farms to sacred sites, such as those dedicated to shrines and royal and ancestral graves. As such, material culture is actively being destroyed and the land desecrated.

To the point of community impacts, colonialism and the spread of Christianity beginning in the early 20th century have cultivated hostility. In assuming a new status as a Christian, converts neglected their traditional responsibilities, which further strained relations between those converted and those not. As seen, culture is the individual in their community and the individual in their environment.

For this reason, appropriate cultural consideration is necessary for preserving the integrity and dignity of the Mbum people. The tension between and within the local population, government, and external organizations puts Mbumland in jeopardy. Where traditional development has failed to meet the needs of the locals, instead asserting a framework prioritizing internal needs, sustainable strategies show due consideration for the lived experiences of marginalized voices to foster long-term growth.

To create harmony and ensure continuity in the development process, ACTLAB seeks the help of three online experteers. By mapping donors and writing grant proposals, experteers will be supporting ACTLAB in cultural heritage and environmental protection, which ultimately allows us to better support local innovators and entrepreneurs.
