Project Description and Impact
The project “Seeking better conditions for victims of Anglophone crisis in Cameroon” aims to address some key issues of the Anglophone crisis which erupted in the North West and South West (English speaking) Regions of Cameroon from 2016 to present and is equally seeking the best ways and means of ameliorating the conditions of the suffering victims in Kumba, Meme Division.
Following marginalization of the Anglophone minority by the Francophone majority in places of work, government appointments and local politics; for over six decades now, in 2016 long standing tension provoked a conflict and in 2017, the government military attacked the two Anglophone regions with artilleries and this resulted to heavy casualties in the Anglophone communities. In retaliation, non-state armed groups (NSAG) destroyed and looted private properties including livestock, destroyed plantations, burnt business premises, stopped children from attending school, burnt over two hundred clinics and hospitals etc.
According to UNCHR 2023 report, there are some 84,000 Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria who fled the armed conflict. The armed conflict also displaced some 600,000 Anglophones (Human Right Watch 2023) and more than 6,000 people dead (ALJAZEERA) in the two English regions of Cameroon. More than 700,000 children deprived of education in the North West and South Regions of Cameroon (MIMI Mefo 10th Jan. 2021).
The crisis brought a lot of hardship and misery to the entire Anglophone community including a lack of education and training for the marginalized and war - turned communities, youth unemployment, food insecurity, poor infrastructure, unsafe-drinking water, child abuses etc. Furthermore, internally displaced persons (especially youths) and Survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the above Region are increasingly feeling the effects of poverty, hardship, acute hunger and poor health which is putting them at greater risk of sexual and physical assaults and abuse, alcohol and drug abuse, unemployment and mental health challenges and the continuous marginalization of the Anglophones by the majority Francophone’s in the Eastern part of the country is highly exacerbated.
This project aims to set up a Multi-purpose Vocatioal Training and Job Creation Centre , to train and create 5000 jobs for displaced youth and other vulnerable groups in our community by 2028.
