Social Impact Project for Cybersecurity Risk Assessment for WIT
How This Works
As part of the TRANSFORM Support Hub, you will learn how to advance your career while getting hands on experience on projects like this one.
Project Description and Impact
Women in Technology (WIT) is dedicated to empowering women and girls in STEAM careers through career development, mentorship, and educational programs. As a nonprofit organization, WIT collects and manages sensitive participant data, including information on program participants, volunteers, donors, and corporate partners. Ensuring the security and privacy of this data is a top priority to protect our community and maintain trust.
The Challenge
Nonprofit organizations are increasingly targeted by cyber threats due to limited cybersecurity resources and smaller IT budgets. WIT needs skilled cybersecurity volunteers to help identify vulnerabilities, strengthen digital security, and implement best practices that protect participant data and maintain compliance with data privacy regulations.
Why This Project is Critical
Protecting Sensitive Data
- WIT serves women in transition, students, and corporate partners—many of whom share personal and professional details through our programs.
- A cybersecurity assessment will ensure strong data protection measures are in place to safeguard this information.
Strengthening WIT’s Digital Infrastructure
- WIT’s website and digital platforms serve as key entry points for program applications, event registrations, and donations.
- Conducting a security audit will help us identify vulnerabilities that could expose the organization to cyber threats such as phishing, hacking, or data breaches.
Ensuring Long-Term Cyber Resilience
- WIT must follow best practices for data privacy and implement proactive security measures to prevent potential attacks.
- A well-documented incident response plan will help WIT’s team react quickly and effectively in case of a cybersecurity incident.
How Skilled Volunteers Can Help
We are looking for cybersecurity professionals and IT security experts to:
- Conduct a full security audit of WIT’s website, network, and data handling practices.
- Provide actionable recommendations to improve digital security and compliance.
- Deliver training and best practices to WIT staff to ensure ongoing cybersecurity awareness.
