Social Impact Project for Startup Community Developer in Nairobi
Project Description and Impact
We are Nairobi's top co-working space for techies, entrepreneurs social innovators. But we want to make it even better by developing the community element of the space, and the value-added benefits people get from being a member of our co-working space. This is what we want you to help us with. We get a lot of feedback from our members that they would like more ways of connecting with each other, with the wider tech and business community, and improving their skills and knowledge. So we know there is a demand, and we also have a lot of good ideas for how we could fulfill this demand. What we really need is a solid plan, with programs, projects, events, laid out which we can implement over the next year, to achieve our goal of increasing the connections and skills within and around the co-working space. Your role will be to develop that plan, through understanding the priorities of members, and scoping out the interests of potential partners. While the central focus is to provide value for our members, we are open to developing paid-for services/programs along side this to non-members. So you can also look into to potential new revenue streams for the company too, if that is something you find interesting.
By participating in the MovingWorlds Institute, you will first learn social impact frameworks and human-centered design before putting your existing skills and new knowledge to action. In addition, this organization will expose you to new things, like:
We are host to around 30 tech companies of various size (about 120 individuals), mainly startups, but also a couple of non-profit companies and investment funds and a dev school. Since 2012, around 150 startups have called our co-working space their home or even birth place. So there is a wealth of opportunity within the space. Kenyan's tech boom is being talked about all over the world - if you are in to innovation and entrepreneurship, Kenya is the place to be right now. Our co-working space also has great partnerships already established with Google, Intel, Microsoft and Samsung. We are at the centre of the tech ecosystem. Our sister company 88mph, which established our co-working space also has around 25 Kenyan startups on its portfolio - some of whom sit within our co-working space. Others are still very much connected to us - as with much of the tech community - and we interact with the regularly through events and to provide advice, contacts and generally share knowledge.
As for the project - there is a lot of room to make this your own. The objective is to figure out a way to make our co-working space an even better tech hub. We encourage you to bring experiences of other co-working spaces. And we believe you will take back a lot about the way we run things and the environment around tech and entrepreneurship in Africa. You will also get to work with an amazing group of people - truly Kenya's best and brightest. That is a guarantee.
You will get to live with the amazing general manager in a 3 bedroom apartment (also the possibility of living in a shared house next to the office, with 2 other expats if there is availability at the time). Walking distance to the office and a lot of opportunities to socialise (our co-working space is above a microbrewery and bar).
We are located in a very nice part of Nairobi, where a lot of international people are located. There are a number of malls, markets, restaurants and bars in the area. The house has everything you would expect to find in a home, including 2 cats who will want your attention.

You will be a true Kenyan by the time you leave - we have a couple of local food spots around the space which you can eat at on us. There is also a large mall 2 mins walk away with everything, including KFC!
Apart from tech, Kenya is well know for its animals! We can help you organise the most amazing weekend trips to see lions, elephants and giraffes. You can also climb Kilimanjaro whilst youre here if youre in to that. Or enjoy the beautiful Kenyan coast. We will help you out with your logistics and you will for sure find people to travel with (the space has around 30% overseas people working from here, most social entrepreneurs from Europe and the US - they are always up for a safari!).
You will make friends for life, from all over the world. Kenyans as well as the expats living in Nairobi are the most welcoming and fun-loving people. We hope you like to party!
