Social Impact Project for Fabric Sourcing Strategy to Promote the Circular Economy and Empower Women
Project Description and Impact
Our organization is currently working to develop and implement a strategy to source deadstock cotton fabric for use in our products (ultra-soft, multi-purpose baby 'kantha' blankets, hand-stitched from reclaimed cotton by struggling mothers in Bangladesh).
Right now, I am trying to get in touch with as many different 'types' of people/organisations as possible, through my network/'cold-searching' on Linkedin etc. However, by taking a more strategic approach to collaborating with like-minded companies (i.e. understanding who to target and how), we will hopefully be able to develop and implement sustainable 'win-win' partnerships to save deadstock fabric from landfills, creating new opportunities for women artisans in the process.
We will be therefore be able to meet part of our two-fold mission i.e. promote the circular economy by promoting a shift from ‘take-make-waste’ ‘reclaim-repurpose-reuse’. Ultimately, it will also help us meet the core of our two-fold mission i.e. creating opportunities for struggling mothers in Bangladesh to provide for their children with dignity and break the inter-generational transmission of poverty.
'Kantha’ refers to both the tradition of mothers crafting blankets for their babies by stitching together their old saris, and the embroidery stitch that is applied over the top. It can also simply mean ‘blanket’. ncorporate the use of deadstock. We are reworking the tradition for a Western market. If we can develop a sustainable sourcing strategy for deadstock fabric, we will be able to produce and sell more blankets, providing more income for the mothers we partner with.
