Thalia Psychotherapy

Organization Details
Thalia Psychotherapy integrates mental health into universal healthcare by using existing health systems and innovative tools. We focus on making mental health services accessible and affordable for everyone, especially marginalized groups. Our work includes anonymous support services like Ajala for men, training community health workers to identify mental health needs, and developing AI-powered referral systems for timely care. Through partnerships with hospitals and the Ministry of Health, we’ve reached over 6,500 facilities across Africa and conducted more than 7 million screenings. Our goal is to ensure mental health is a core part of overall health care, breaking down barriers and stigma along the way.
Impact Story
Thalia Psychotherapy was established to address the urgent need for accessible mental health care across Africa, where stigma, resource limitations, and systemic challenges often leave millions without support. Mental health remains a silent crisis, particularly affecting marginalized groups such as men, rural women, youth, and persons with disabilities. To bridge this gap, Thalia has developed practical solutions that integrate mental health services into existing healthcare systems. Initiatives like Ajala, an anonymous hotline offering men a judgment-free space to discuss their struggles, and training programs for community health volunteers (CHVs) to recognize early warning signs, are helping break down barriers and ensure timely interventions. Our mission is clear: to make mental health care accessible, affordable, and inclusive for everyone.
The impact of our work spans five African countries—Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and Malawi—with plans to expand further. Currently, Thalia operates in over 6,500 health centers, conducting more than 7 million screenings to identify individuals in need of mental health support. For example, a CHV trained by Thalia in a rural Kenyan clinic identified a young mother suffering from postpartum depression. Without our intervention, she might have gone untreated, affecting her well-being and her child’s development. Thanks to our referral system and partnerships with local clinics, she received the care she needed. Similarly, Ajala has become a lifeline for countless men across the continent who previously felt they had no one to turn to. These stories highlight our commitment to transforming lives and building healthier communities. By embedding mental health into universal health coverage, Thalia is working toward a future where mental well-being is prioritized alongside physical health for all.
