Koloso Ltd
Organization Details
Koloso has developed a learning assessment app for primary and secondary school teachers in sub-Saharan Africa - reducing teacher workload, increasing teaching efficiency and helping to improve learning outcomes.
Students take a two minute, 10 question, daily quiz, with questions matched to the school curriculum, the child's grade and the class teaching plan. Their results are then analysed against curriculum learning objectives, and a learning gap analysis fed back to the student, the teacher and the parent. Everyone knows in real time exactly where each child is on their learning journey, with zero effort for teachers to set or mark quizzes, or collate results.
Impact Story
We exist because there is a learning crisis in sub-Saharan Africa - according to the World Bank and others, learning poverty runs at 90%+ across the region. Schools and teachers are under-resourced and overwhelmed - and the population is growing all the time.
Teachers need help, and systems need to change. Evidence tells us that teacher-led, face-to-face, targeted instruction delivers the best results, so we have created a low cost, simple, easy to use app that empowers, rather than displaces teachers. The data can be used at the micro-level to target instruction, at the meso (school) level to help school leaders manage for results, and at the macro (national) level to guide policy making and resource allocation.
We are currently working with the Jacobs Foundation/MIT LEAP Challenge to strengthen our evidence base so that we can make reliable, specific and evidenced claims about improving learning outcomes, but all of the general evidence and indications from early adopters are that Koloso does help.
We are on a mission to improve access to quality education across the continent (and potentially beyond).
