Organization Details

The Behavioral Insights and Parenting Lab (BIP Lab) at the University of Chicago brings together interdisciplinary scholars to design, evaluate, and disseminate programs to help children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their full potential by improving caregivers’ engagement in their learning. The BIP Lab has a special focus on harnessing technology to deliver cost-effective, behaviorally informed programs to caregivers and teachers to improve their engagement with children and decision-making on behalf of children. The BIP Lab is a 2024 winner of the MIT Solve and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation “Learner Meets Future: AI-Enabled Assessments Challenge.”

Impact Story

The BIP Lab’s team of full-time staff, post-doc and PhD scholars, and student research assistants have worked with over 500 community partners serving low-income families with young children in Chicago and across the US. All the BIP Lab’s research and research-informed programs are informed by the systematic data collection and analysis conducted in partnership with these institutions and the 15,000+ families they serve who participated in the BIP Lab’s research programs over 10 years. These partner institutions and their families are involved in the co-creation and co-visioning of all programs the BIP Lab designs.

Our team primarily designs and rigorously tests promising interventions to support children's learning with an experimental randomized control trial design. We also conduct program evaluations of external interventions that align with our mission. Now with 10 years of research and evaluation behind us, we are launching the Chat2Learn AI Suite to support both parents and teachers to have high-quality conversations with young children that promote their language skills and curiosity. We are invested in testing this program in a variety of economically disadvantaged contexts and bringing it to scale nationally and internationally along with other promising interventions to support children's learning.
