Organization Details
BWEng is an organization with the primary mission of promoting gender and racial diversity within the engineering field, specifically focusing on increasing the visibility and representation of black women in engineering on a global scale. This organization is dedicated to advancing diversity and inclusion in the engineering sector through a multi-faceted approach that includes; Networking events to bring professionals, students and industry leader together to foster connections and collaborations, Professional development opportunities for professionals to empower black women engineers to excel in their careers and reach their full potential and Outreach Programme tailored for female engineering students to inspire and guide the next generation of engineers by providing valuable insights, skills, and opportunities to work on projects based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as well as others within the engineering and beyond.
Impact Story
The organization exists to serves as a catalyst for positive change within the engineering industry by actively working to break down barriers, address disparities and promote diversity with a particular focus on increasing the representation of black women in engineering. We are driven by a dedication to create a more diverse, inclusive, and dynamic engineering community. Since our inception in 2020, we have made significant strides in achieving our objectives and effecting positive change in the engineering community.
We have cultivated a thriving community of over 600 members, which includes both black female engineers and allies who share our commitment to diversity and inclusion. This diverse and extensive network is the heart of our organization. We've organized and hosted over 7 networking events, providing a platform for our members to forge invaluable connections and collaborations. Our events have enabled our members to discover mentors and expand their professional networks. We have equipped our members with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive professionally through the professional development workshops we’ve ran. The success stories speak for themselves, as evidenced by a member securing a job secondment to Australia after applying the lessons learned from our workshop. We have had over 90 female engineering students from Malawi, Nigeria, and Kenya participate in 3 engineering outreach programmes. These programs have provided students with the guidance and resources to explore engineering. They've had the opportunity to connect with professionals and entrepreneurs, expanding their horizons and aspirations. Notably, a team from our engineering outreach program in Kenya achieved a remarkable feat by winning the NASA Space Apps Challenge. The positive impact we've made so far is evident in the success stories of our members, the expansion of our network and the achievements of the young engineers we've had the privilege of inspiring and guiding.
