How This Works

As part of the TRANSFORM Support Hub, you will learn how to advance your career while getting hands on experience with organizations like this one.

Organization Details

Grounded in the belief that in community we have everything we need, GatherFor aspires to help neighborhoods become self-sufficient. We do this by organizing neighbors into teams of 5-7 to support one another like family and then by linking those teams to each other to build the Neighborhood they want. Our "Neighbor Teams" meet every 2-4 weeks to share stories and check in with each other. They pool funds to pay bills, which we match up to $500 each month. They host in-person gatherings with $300 in funding from us each month. They watch each others kids, help one another find food and work, talk each other through depression, visit each other when sick, and more. They have now begun coming together in order to make changes in the Neighborhood with connections, support, and funding from us as well. You can read a blog post about a recent campaign led by our participants to get repairs done to their homes by the city of New York.

Impact Story

We exist because we believe in community, we have everything we need.

Nadine came to GatherFor not knowing many people in the building after being relocated to New York from Virgina, where she experienced domestic violence. She didn't have a job, reliable food sources to feed her kids, and was living in delapidated public housing.

Hank lost his house in a fire and his job in the pandemic. He was depressed and feeling deeply alone. His relationship with his girlfriend was keeping him going, but when it abruptly ended, he became suicidal.

Nadine and Hank joined GatherFor and were matched on a team together along with a few others. The team quickly rallied around Hank, meeting with him everyday at one point to help him through this dark moment. He said, "I have never been loved so deeply, except by my own mother." He emerged from his depression and suicide to start his own nonprofit, join local boards, and get deeply involved in the community.

Nadine got guidance from a member of her team who'd been going to food pantries in the community to get food. The group pooled funds (with matches from GatherFor) to help her stay afloat so that she was able to find a job. She was eventually able to save up enough to buy a car. Through workshops we hosted at GatherFor, we introduced her to partners and helped her get a voucher to get into a better housing situation, and she and her daughters moved into this beautiful home a few months ago.

Neighbors can transform each other's lives coming together.
