ABALOBI
Organization Details
ABALOBI – meaning fisher in the isiXhosa language – is a South African-based non-profit organisation with global reach. Through our world-first fisheries improvement technologies and programmes, we strive to poise small-scale fisheries for ecological, economic and social sustainability. Our intent is to develop thriving, equitable, resilient and sustainable small-scale fishing communities through the application of data and Technology For Good within fisheries rebuilding and social entrepreneurship frameworks. We are a fisher-led enabler, development intermediary and accelerator.
Impact Story
In our approach to Triple Bottom Line sustainability, we: (i) configure, develop and employ enabling technologies in partnership with fishers; (ii) provide tailored learning opportunities on the use of our tech and themes pertinent to fishers; (iii) invest in decentralised infrastructure for cold chain and logistics in coastal communities; (iv) develop and link fishers to fair markets for fully traceable, ecologically responsible and socially fair seafood; (v) institute food security initiatives; (vi) activate tailored financial services to build resilience and promote financial inclusion; (vii) create data toolkits to engage fishers in co-management and enhance climate resilience; and (viii) support fishers to implement locally-led Fisheries Improvement Programmes.
