The Kelp Forest Foundation (KFF) is a non-profit organization headquartered in the Netherlands. It was established in 2021 by Kelp Blue, a renowned and innovative large-scale offshore giant kelp cultivation enterprise. KFF serves a vital role in ensuring that Kelp Blue's efforts to restore global ocean abundance and mitigate climate change are firmly rooted in scientific research and evidence.
Impact Story
KFF is on a mission to independently and transparently establish the ecosystem value of cultivated kelp forests as a powerful nature-based solution. Whereas kelp forests are known to sequester huge amounts of carbon, provide long term solutions to climate change, and serve as a foundation species for vast marine ecological pyramids, the ecological role and benefits of kelp, on the other hand, remain understudied. KFF addresses this gap in science and knowledge by raising awareness around the economic and ecological importance of kelp forests, building knowledge across communities, driving academic research, and overall strengthening the science around wild forest restoration and cultivated kelp afforestation. The research conducted by KFF and the results generated are publicly available with open access, ensuring that all interested stakeholders can have the data to accelerate solutions to a range of related problems.
In addition to research, KFF aims to play an instrumental role in fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing within the scientific and environmental communities by organizing conferences, workshops, and symposiums to facilitate discussions, exchange ideas, and promote interdisciplinary research on kelp ecosystems. Furthermore, KFF is building the capacities and skills necessary for our next generation of oceanographers and ocean custodians, as well as creating a global network of giant kelp seed banks to preserve genetic diversity for future generations.
