Project Description and Impact

About NELIS and OMLA

The Next Leaders’ Initiative for Sustainability, or NELIS, is a local-to-global community platform of over 1,200 on-the-ground sustainability practitioners and stakeholders representing 60+ countries, connected to pave the way towards a sustainable future. NELIS was created out of the urgent need in the world for “next-generation leadership,” which integrates social and environmental considerations into decision-making regardless of whether we are talking of agriculture, business, urban planning, politics, education, health, or other sectors of society. NELIS argues that only by linking a new generation of sustainability practitioners across the world in a collaborative network will humanity be able to shift towards a more humane and ecologically sound model of social and economic development, encouraging youth to make decisions and take action on the basis of sustainability.

Our pilot cohort, One Million Leaders Africa 2022, is a pan-African fellowship and the first OML cohort designed to help raise a new pan-African generation of high-impact leadership, for and founded by young Africans who are passionate about sustainability and African communities. Our project aims to address one of the biggest challenges to sustainable high-impact leadership in sub-Saharan Africa- accountability in its many forms. To address this, countries need a new generation of Young African Leaders, as they have a key role to play in accelerating the successful implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

So far, the OMLA Secretariat has recruited and selected 20 fellows from across sub-Saharan Africa. By the end of the fellowship year, we are expecting to have raised 6,020 future pan-African leaders of sustainable development, hoping to increase the number of fellowship and community project participants every year depending on our pilot outcomes.
