Hosting an Experteer is a reciprocal partnership rooted in trust, respect, and shared commitment to impact. These Hosting Principles outline what MovingWorlds expects of host organizations to ensure a productive, ethical, and meaningful Experteering experience for all involved.
Hosts never charge an Experteer for their time
Experteers make a significant investment by traveling to your site and donating their time and expertise to accelerate your organization’s progress. Experteering is based on an exchange of resources and values, which means hosts must also invest time and effort into the relationship.
This includes never charging Experteers for their time or for services provided to your organization.
Using the provided planning guide
To ensure a productive, effective, and fair Experteering experience, both parties commit to collaborating on a clear project plan before the project begins. This plan should include defined goals, scope, and deliverables.
Hosts agree to work through the MovingWorlds Planning Process, partnering with their Experteer to complete the MovingWorlds planning guide prior to the start of the project.
To support effective communication and project success
Clear, timely communication is critical to a successful Experteering experience. When Experteers have sufficient information about the project, the organization, and local conditions, they are better equipped to deliver meaningful results.
This includes being responsive to questions, requests for clarification, and introduction emails throughout the planning and project phases.
To ensure the Experteer is well informed
You and your team are the experts in your organization and local context. While Experteers bring valuable skills and experience, they rely on hosts to provide guidance, mentorship, and institutional knowledge.
By being an active and engaged host — responding promptly, sharing information generously, and remaining open to learning from the Experteer as well — you help create the conditions for a successful project.
To reduce barriers to participation and enable focus on impact
Providing access to basic logistical support, particularly housing, is an important factor in enabling Experteering projects. Experteers are often new to the host country and unfamiliar with local short-term rental markets.
While providing free housing is not a requirement to become a host organization, it significantly increases the likelihood of being matched with a qualified Experteer. Past host organizations have offered housing in a variety of forms, including:
