Description and Impact

As tourism increases in Medellin, foreign businesses have benefited tremendously. However, the local communities have limited access to this prosperity and we hope to provide opportunities for local Colombians to tap into the economic opportunities that come with increased tourism.

Originally, our organization organized Group Hikes, Cultural Walks, Weekend Trips, and Trekking opportunities in Medellin and around Antioquia as a way to bring locals and foreigners together while generating a small income for the tour guides. We operated more like a club attracting local residents and foreigners who live and study in Medellin. For that reason, our events have been limited mostly to weekends.

We're looking to expand our operations and formalize our business structure. To this effect, we're going to expand the availability of our events. We're seeking an Experteer with marketing experience to help us increase our visibility and reach tourists who are in Medellin for a short time only: backpackers, families, and other visitors.

Our organization contributes a significant portion (25% at this moment) of earnings for each hiking trip towards projects from partner Foundations that support displaced and/or underprivileged families living in Medellin (after all, the reason we like Medellin so much is because of the people - and they deserve to benefit too). We have undertaken some of our own small social initiatives as well and have goals of opening a community house that offers temporary housing and support to struggling single parents or other marginalized community members.

The goal of this project is for our organization to be made more visible to tourists and shorter-term visitors to Medellin and Antioquia, so that when visitors search for "hiking / trekking in Medellin", "things to do in Medellin", etc., our organization is more likely to be found. Some help with our website appearing more professional and dynamic would be also be a bonus.

Other requirements

Ideally, the Experteer would be able to help set us up to be able to continue to maintain the progress ourselves / be in touch after the project is done!

Also, we put "online only" because it isn't necessary to do the work in Medellin, but it would also be great to have someone who is in Medellin or is interested in visiting to come hang out and join us for a couple hikes!

We Provide These Local Benefits

Benefits Overview

  • Learning Opportunity
  • Meal Stipend
  • Good For Groups

Learning Opportunity

The Experteer can gain more experience getting to know the sustainable tourism industry in a competitive, rapidly increasing industry, and will have a lot of flexibility and autonomy as far as what strategies they choose in order to accomplish our goal.

Food Stipend

If the Experteer is in Medellin we are happy to pay for lunches for the duration of the project! Since we are only asking for a couple hours a day for a short amount of time so we hope these will provide energy for those hours.

Additional Benefits

Experteer is welcome to join for all hikes, cultural walks, or other events that we provide, free of cost and with transportation paid for! I'm also available and happy to bring the experteer to get to know some interesting, off-the-beaten-path places in Medellin that the vast majority of visitors don't see, as well as provide any recommendations or company for events, nightlife, or any other activities. I think Medellin is really fascinating and am enthusiastic about sharing my knowledge about the city.
