Social Impact Project for Brand Strategy and Design for Social Justice in Colombia

How This Works

In the MovingWorlds Institute Global Fellowship, you will learn how to advance your for-good career while getting hands on experience on projects like this one.

Project Description and Impact

There is a long history of violence and social injustice in Colombia and in Medellín. In spite of having a democratic structure of governance and various institutional and educational reforms over the past 3 decades, the power structure, the education and the distribution of wealth has not significantly changed. This has created a complex situation in which social injustice can proliferate.

Our organization is a non-profit contemporary art center whose mission is to promote social justice through art and education. As a socially oriented arts organization we have a unique history. In 2007 we began with a focus on promoting and improving and expanding local artistic practices. In 2012 we began to work with children and youth on projects designed to create more civic consciousness. Our work since that time has expanded and has allowed us to work with hundreds of local, national and international artists, children, youth, women, ex-combatants, the LGTBI community, the art community and others.

We do this in three ways. We create awareness by bringing attention to and educating the public on issues such as history of the armed conflict, human rights, environment, gender equality, women’s rights, citizenship and the peace process in Colombia. We work with individuals, communities and organizations by creatively promoting their own potential through our facilitation and educational models so that they can address their situations and implement the changes that will allow them to address their needs. We help local artists who work in education and social and community based organizations to recognize these practices as artistic practices, to implement more creative processes in their practice, and to improve the impact in the community and to distinguish their practice on the local, national and international level.

Learning Opportunity

By participating in the MovingWorlds Institute, you will first learn social impact frameworks and human-centered design before putting your existing skills and new knowledge to action. In addition, this organization will expose you to new things, like:

The Experteer will learn a lot about the realities and unique aspects of Medellíin and Colombia from an historical, social, political point of view.

She/he will learn the realities of a socially oriented contemporary arts organization in Latin America, which will serve as a point of reference in the future.

Accommodation

The accommodation consists of one of the rooms that are normally available to artists and academics who stay with our organization to realize projects or research here in Medellín. Depending on the time of the visit the room might be a smaller room with a private bath and two twin beds or a larger room with a shared bathroom.

The Experteer will have complete access to the kitchen facilities in the house as well as wifi.

Additional Benefits

We will analyze our budget to see if we can help with some of the local living expenses. This will also depend on the time of the visit and the resources that we have available.

We can provide orientation in the city,  city tours, tours of the surrounding towns, and perhaps even further away from the city.

Introduction to local figures who might be of interest to the Experteer.

Some shared social time can also anticipated beyond the tours.

Virtual

This project accepts virtual experteers.
