Impact Story
Infokul Grameen, as the name suggests, has the aim / mandate to empower rural poor, especially women who are increasingly moving towards group enterprise at village level, by linking them directly to remunerative and assured nearby markets by providing market information and knowledge. This has brought in transformative impact on a group of 30 women dairy farmers in Rajasthan, India.
Tucked amidst the idyllic Aravali range, Rata Khurd village in Kishangarh bas block of Alwar, Rajasthan, presents a picture of serenity. However, under its veneer of tranquillity, is daily struggle to eke out a living for its about 250 households, with a sizeable population belonging to SC Community (23.62 %). Most of them have either no or very low land holdings and are forced to take daily wage work for their livelihood. In fact, a significant 31.61% is involved in marginal work, which is for less than six months in a year. To supplement their income, a large number of households also undertake dairy activity, owning upto 3 bovine livestock, looked after by women folk of the family. However, it is very difficult for these women dairy farmers to have access to an assured and regular market away from the village for milk and milk products. They are forced to sell their produce at a throw away price to local Dudhiya, the middlemen from the unorganized sector. Farmer Producer Organization Spectra Mahila Utpadak Producer Company Limited organised a women collective of about 50 women dairy farmers (Dairy Didis) at the village under the aegis of I-MILK, an integrated dairy development program of Infokul Grameen. Since the start of the program a year back about 30 of these Dairy Didis have earned nearly Rupee 1 lakh by pouring milk regularly at the village collection centre at a price significantly higher than what they used to get, for onward selling to big hotels about 100 km away.
