Impact Story
GenePlus exists to transform smallholder farmers livelihoods through establishing their farming entities into profitable enterprises. GenePlus' last-mile service delivery model enhances accessibility, affordability, and awareness of critical farm inputs and modern farming technologies to increase adoption in rural areas. Adoption of modern technologies is critical to increase farm productivity and eventual farmer income. Nearly 60% of smallholder farmers in Kenya is women and youths. This model empowers women to achieve more and creates job opportunities for youths majority of whom are aged 18 - 35 years who serve as service providers administering critical extension services to farmers.
GenePlus has carried out a successful pilot in Eldoret and Mount Kenya. The farmer's reception was overwhelming throughout the pilot phase. The Digitized service module is ready for scale-up and commercialization. Through the pilot phase, over 40,000 smallholder farmers were onboarded and trained through partnerships with cooperatives and other institutions with a majority being women (7886 out of the total). Over 2000 animals were served through last-mile services resulting in farmers saving cost by approximately $61,000 and creation of over 50 jobs for animal health technicians, most of whom are young men who are dependent on services for income. GenePlus generated $5 7,195 in sales revenues.
The last-mile service delivery model is ready for scaling with immense potential to address diverse smallholder farmers needs and offer significant benefits such as increased production, employment opportunities for youth and establishment of stable dairy enterprises for women thereby promoting gender equality.
