Impact Story

Our work has impacted over 25,000 rural producers, over 90% being women in 16 states and 350 villages in India

Use of modern, solar powered, production equipment and sustainable business model is attracting young generation to this occupation. About 20% of Resham Sutra’s direct beneficiaries are under the age of 30 years. This bodes well for the future of the craft.

The income of the users increases by over 90% by the use of our machines. More than 90% of our customers are rural women. These women have few other job options. The additional income has helped to improve family lifestyle and future for the children. This money is often spent to send children to schools and colleges, save for occasions like marriage and to improve security. Many of our customers have been able to break out of shackles of exploitation of the middle men. They are now able to work as independent entrepreneurs rather than exploited job workers.

Our machines have helped the women to break away from derogatory practices like ‘Thigh reeling’ of silk yarn, which was practised in the states of Bihar, Chattisgarh and Odisha since ages. This has huge impact in social status and health of these women. They are able to work with greater dignity and look forward to a brighter future. They are now even keen to bring their daughters and family members in this work willingly.

One of our products, Buniyaad machine, was launched by the Minister of Textiles. Their study of the impact of this machine noted that women who originally produced 70 grams of yarn per day through the traditional thigh reeling method could now produce up to 200 grams of yarn per day. This has resulted in an increase in their daily income from $1.76 (₹125) to $4.92 (₹350) i.e. over 3.5 times.[1]
