Impact Story
I wish to find an alternative to the massive hydropower dams building spree in the Mekong river of Laos. After about five years, i have helped a local developer attract interest in a global energy dveloper . By supporting the project from its very early stage ,the collaboration has allowed the 300MW solar project to advance to near-bankable stage , and we are currently negotiating with the offtaker. When this shall ultimately succeed in less than a year, it will be the very first non-hydro transboundary power project in Laos .It acts as a catalyst by the goverment to start a legal framwework for more solar and wind power projects . In so doing , there could be more balancing of sources of power generation for export. This is a critial turning point for the river and its biodiversity as well as for the 50 million riverine communities whose livelihood are dependent on the Mekong river.Up until now, demand for cheap hydropower has disturbed the fish migratory habits and reduced the water level and quality. Government and NGOs have addressed the environmental impacts but with little success. I have worked on finding a commercially viable alternative to hydropower . After the completion of this 300 MW Solar project, we will work on a 650 MW wind project for the same purpose of attracting investment into these better projects as alternatives to hydropower.
