Organization Details

Umunthu Plus was established in 2015 by concerned group of young women primary school teachers. We are Umunthu Plus a Malawian Local Organization working in areas of Economic empowerment, health, Education, Gender equality and women empowerment, Agriculture, Human Rights and social justice in Malawi. We are registered with Malawi Government, NGO board of Malawi and Council for Non- Governmental organization (CONGOMA).  We are a dynamic organization that listens and supports communities to break the cycle of human suffering through acquisition of quality health and education services. Umunthu Plus seeks to prevent and alleviate human suffering and achieve social justice in Malawi. Umunthu Plus focuses on implementing programs on prevention of gender based violence as a critical intervention that cuts across issues of cultural practices, economic development and sexual reproductive health and rights in line with Malawi's National GBV Action Plan

Impact Story

At Umunthu Plus, we are challenged by the strides we have made in ensuring communities especially women, girls and youth  have easy access to health services, girls remain and complete their education, are economically empowered and, above all have the ability to claim and defend their rights. UP believes in bottom-up and holistic approach to development, focusing on individual behaviour change amongst most vulnerable population as well as systematic change in policy and practice towards a more supportive environment for women development focusing on investments for education, health and human rights.

We offer economic empowermnet to the most marginalised population including people living with disabilities, living with HIV, survivors of Gender Based Violence in areas of community and backyard garden, farmers organization empowerment including group dynamics, mushroom production, cassava production and value chain addition, rice, maize, Farmers have been trained in post-harvest handling so as to reduce the after-production losses which have been identified as one of major challenges faced by farmers in Malawi. We have managed to train 50 groups, they are trained in Village Savings and loan approach. We have also provided over 200 livestocks for production on pass on basis which is also helping a lot on manure making. Umunthu Plus has been working in areas of gender transformative through working with men and boys as champions in ending gender based violence using He for She (HE4SHE) approach, engaging local and religious leaders over 2000 men and boys have been reached. We have managed to reach over 5000 smallholder farmers with conservation agriculture activities, provided to over 3000 women and infants of HIV health care services, trained 60 adolescent girls as peer educators, supported 2000 students with school needs including school fees.
