Nanay

Organization Details
Over the past 12 years Nanay has provided work to over 600 knitters finding international markets for their knitted products. These knitters are mainly women who are the sole breadwinners for their families. Nanay empowers these women and supports their livelihoods by paying fair wages for their knitted children clothing production, allowing these indigenous, low-income families to access better food, housing, healthcare and education. Nanay was born as business with a truly sustainable and social ethos, which cares about the well-being of all the people in its ecosystem. Today Nanay is a fair-trade certified company.
Impact Story
According to Unicef report “A projection made based on the figures of the last National Population Census (2001) allows us to conclude that currently 2,600,000 women, of which girls and adolescents, live in poverty.” Aware of this reality and confirming the Skills that many indigenous women have in knitting technique in Bolivia, Nanay finds great potential in a project using these weaknesses as strengths to generate work and income for this bottom of the pyramid population.
This is how our project was created twelve years ago generating jobs for 600 women. These women are the main heads of income for their homes who manage to have an income that allows them to give their children better food, better education and a higher living standard. Nanay model allows women to do work from their homes, therefore being able to keep their role as mothers, allowing them to give their children better care by being next to them.
Bolivia is a country of high unemployment rate, where native women don’t have access to jobs. With our project we are creating access to income for this disadvantage population.
