PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND IMPACT

We work in close collaboration with us, alongside a team of committed and high energy local and very friendly staff. They have a great program which improves the quality of life for the animals and birds, many of which have survived trafficking or abuse and come to the zoo as a refuge. You will work on a programme which seeks to keep the animals entertained, fit and happy – for example, making hide and seek food games,  creating “toys” to stimulate the animals and supporting the work in the kitchen because there are a lot of hungry mouths to feed. Our facilities are home to many animals from the Andes such as condors, spectacled bears, llamas and vicuñas, as well as their neighbours form the Amazon region, including jaguars, pumas and reptiles.

We serve as as a big open air classroom for local schools, who come not only to learn about the animals but also to receive ecological education about recycling and animal trafficking etc.

How can you participate as a volunteer?

We are looking for Experteers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty and are willing to support very diverse tasks, from landscaping, helping in the kitchen, to developing and delivering educational programmes for schools. Experteers will not directly handle the animals, but you will be at close quarters and working alongside people who love and care for these animals. And of course, if you have ideas, please, don’t hesitate to share them; the zoo staff are very open to innovation, especially if the Experteers want to be very proactive and implement their suggestions.

ACCOMMODATION

We are based in the small village of Jupapina, which is approx 30-45 mins by bus from the city centre. It is a beautiful semi-rural village surrounded by mountains. There is a very strong sense of community - perhaps the most enriching aspect of our volunteers’ experience to date has been participating in this small community and getting a very real flavor of Aymara culture.

Volunteers live in shared volunteer accommodation in the grounds of our family home with some of the best view in La Paz over the mountains and down in the valley below. There are single and shared rooms – depending on availability. The houses are very comfortable and fully equipped, with kitchen, shared living areas, hammocks, Wi-Fi, cable TV and DVD machines and access to the family washing machine.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

You will learn about running and objectives a zoo

You will work in a multidisciplinary team.

You will learn more about the socio-economic context of Bolivia and situation of animal trafficking

If you have particular expertise, we will ask you to share this expertise and experience through giving talks with university students, professional and perhaps the media in Bolivia.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS

We can offer you a real flavor of Bolivia, living and working in a beautiful friendly village. You will understand indigenous Bolivian culture and be invited to participate in local fiestas and celebrations.

The accommodation is beautiful and a good place to relax when you are not working.

We will happily share with you tips and advice for local tourism too in Bolivia and help you set up Spanish classes too.

Before you arrive we will discuss your expectations and send you a provisional work plan and a pre arrival orientation pack.

Upon arrival we will spend a full day giving your orientation, take you round the local shops, show you where to change money etc and show you how to use the local transport system.
