Better Life Vietnam

A For-profit with social mission

How This Works

As part of the TRANSFORM Support Hub, you will learn how to advance your career while getting hands on experience with organizations like this one.

Organization Details

Better Life Vietnam (BLV) is a non-profit organization working to improve the lives of people facing poverty in Vietnam. Since 2013, BLV has focused on improving education conditions for the underprivileged children. In order to sustain our non-profit work, we have recently launched a social enterprise–Tours for Books, which is independent but complementary to the existing non profit - BLV. The focus of the social enterprise will be  to drive development and education in specific poor regions of Vietnam. Profits generated by the social enterprise are to be reinvested in voluntourism  in order to foster education, generate employment opportunities, encourage tourism, and in general drive some degree of development to targeted regions.

Impact Story

Our projects include establishing free textbooks libraries for elementary school children and Providing scholarship to enable underprivileged children to go to school.

Children do not enjoy free education in Vietnam. Families have to pay part of the school fee. They also have to buy textbooks, uniforms and other educational materials themselves. School fees range from VND 360,000 (19$) per year for pupils who live in rural and mountainous areas, to VND 1,800,000 for pupils who live in big cities. Those costs are really a big burden to families who live in rural and mountainous areas, because their average income is only 20,000 VND (1$) per day ( or even less). Better Life Vietnam has worked really hard to address this problem and help to reduce the burden for the poor families of Vietnam.

Our first project aiming at providing free textbooks to underprivileged children through a lending library system. In the first three years, we were able to raise enough fund to purchase and provide books to thousands of children in rural villages in the North of Vietnam.  Each set of textbook only cost $3 but it was useful to a child for the whole school year. Through the textbooks delivering ceremonies, we were also able to talk to the children and their parents about the importance of education. We were so happy to hear from the parents that our project also encouraged their children to study harder for a better future.

In addition,we have also engaged in charitable trips to bring warm clothes and school materials to children in rural and mountainous areas in northern Vietnam. Our goal for the next five years is to continue to expand our work to help the underprivileged children and youth have access to better education and employment opportunities in tourism sector.
