Improve Public Health System Navigation for Indigenous Patients
Support Good Health and Well-being in Otavalo, Ecuador
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND IMPACT
We are an organization that facilitates cross-cultural service learning, community initiatives, and scholarships in highland Ecuador and Mali's Dogon Country.
We need an Experteer that will assist patients of all ages who are referred by volunteer medical providers for additional care. The Experteer will need to contact them and help them navigate the public health system, the Experteer will also need to work along side local health care professionals and organization staff to set up and accompany patients to appointments at the rural health centers and the hospitals in Otavalo, Ibarra, or Quito.
You will also help prepare for and participate in Health Care Volunteer Vacations. The preparation will consist of getting paperwork ready, delivering letters to inform the communities, and organizing and taking inventory of medicines and supplies. During the medical volunteer programs, you will be a part of the team traveling to a different rural village each day to provide primary care. We are seeking someone with case management experience who can improve our efficiency and effectiveness in teaching patients to use the public health system.
This project will be deemed a success if, by the end,follow-up 25 referred patients have received the follow up care they need through Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health and/or other local foundations. Additionally, the Experteer will have created a new patient follow-up manual to guide future volunteers and will have written a program model to help us seek funding for the patient follow-up program.
