Description and Impact
Our organization strives to make life better for impoverished children in El Porvenir, Honduras. United by the desire to improve quality of life for both children and adults, we coordinate volunteer-powered programs to support educational enrichment, healthy living, creativity, and community.
We're seeking an Experteer with a background in education and curriculum design. The Experteer would help to develop a thematic monthly curriculum so volunteer teachers are able to understand what will be covered and prepare for their work in advance. The curriculum includes: circle time, story time, computer time, along with art, music, science and sports activities to go along with the English immersion or Spanish literacy lesson. We already have a structure in place but will need ongoing materials activities as our students progress. In addition, we have several smaller programs (Adult English, Teen Program, Kinder, etc.) that need curriculum support as well.
This project will be considered a success if our volunteers and managers can be supported with ongoing, progressive, thematic lessons. We do our best to avoid repetition of the programs as volunteers come and go and so good record keeping is essential. We will know that this is successful if we have a creative and experiential curriculum in place with plenty of time to train our incoming volunteers.
The timing is somewhat flexible since our need is ongoing.
Additional Useful Skills
Our ideal candidate has worked with and/or has an understanding of the educational issues facing children living in developing countries.
We Provide These Local Benefits
- Learning Opportunity
We have two volunteer houses in El Porvenir. They each have a complete kitchen, bathrooms with showers, electricity and wifi. Normally volunteers have to pay rent but housing fees will be waived for the Experteer.
We are a very "hands on" program. Our volunteers are involved in the implementation of all aspects of the programs for children. The Experteer will learn about non-profit operations, challenges of operating in a developing country and about living in true community. There will be instant feedback on the success of the curriculum plans. Our village is very friendly but extremely poor. Our volunteers interact daily with children and families living in extreme poverty and are often amazed at how, even with so little, people are still willing to share. In addition, our community is surrounded by pineapple fields and so living in our village is also a lesson in corporate farming and how workers subsist on low wages and irregular work schedules.
In addition to hands on experience and a great support network, we will gladly provide enthusiastic letters of recommendation! We have hosted 4 previous Experteers and would be happy to have you speak with them once accepted into our program.
This project accepts applications for virtual experteers.
